Cherokee National Supreme Court Museum Information

Welcome to the Cherokee National Supreme Court Museum, a historic treasure located in Oklahoma. Housed in a beautifully preserved building dating back to the 1800s, the museum showcases artifacts, documents, and exhibits highlighting the evolution of Cherokee law and governance.

The Cherokee Nation owns and operates the museum, which offers a fascinating glimpse into the Cherokee people's judicial history. James S. Pierce built this structure in 1844 on the southeastern corner of Tahlequah town square to house the Cherokee National Supreme Court.

Justice John Martin was the first chief justice of the Supreme Court when it was established. The Supreme and District courts both held sessions here for some time.

The building also housed the Cherokee Advocate's printing press, the Cherokee Nation's official publication and the first newspaper in Oklahoma. It is the oldest government building in the state of Oklahoma.

Visitors can explore the courtroom where important decisions were made, gaining insight into the legal system of the Cherokee Nation.

The museum's decor reflects its historical significance, with period furnishings and exhibits curated to provide an immersive experience. Amenities include guided tours, educational programs, and a gift shop offering unique souvenirs related to Cherokee history and culture.

Situated in the heart of Tahlequah, the capital of the Cherokee Nation, the museum is surrounded by other cultural landmarks and attractions. Nearby points of interest include the Cherokee Heritage Center, which showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Cherokee people, and the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail, which commemorates the forced removal of the Cherokee from their ancestral lands.

Outside the museum, visitors can enjoy the picturesque landscape of Oklahoma, with rolling hills, lush forests, and winding rivers creating a scenic backdrop for exploration. Whether you're interested in history and culture or simply appreciate natural beauty, the Cherokee National Supreme Court Museum invites you to discover the enduring legacy of the Cherokee Nation.
