Nevada Indian Territory Adventure: Northern Route

Take to the open road to experience the history, culture and rugged outdoor adventure that Northern Nevada Indian Territory has to offer.

On a four-day circuit departing from Reno, road trippers will learn about the Washoe, Paiute and Shoshone cultures by visiting museums and historic sites, traversing scenic byways and exploring native lands through the great outdoors. Day 1: Reno to Carson City Highlights

  • Gatekeeper’s Museum: The museum showcases the culture of the Washoe (Wa She Shu) people, the history of Lake Tahoe, and features many works from famous Washoe weavers.
  • Cave Rock State Park: Cave Rock (De’ek wadapushand) is one of the most sacred cultural and spiritual sites to the Washoe people and the park provides scenic views of Lake Tahoe.
  • Stewart Indian School: This boarding school was established by the Federal Government to educate American Indian children with the goal of assimilation, operating from 1890 through 1980.


Day 2: Carson City to Fallon Highlights

  • Walker River Paiute Reservation: The home of the Walker River Paiute Tribe (Agai-Dicutta), you can fish and camp at the Weber Reservoir (Tribal permit required) and purchase American Indian crafts at the Four Seasons Market in Schurz.
  • Churchill County Museum: At the museum, tour exhibits and discover artifacts that interpret what life was like for the area’s early Northern Paiute (Numu) and Western Shoshone (Newe) inhabitants.


Day 3: Fallon to Lovelock Highlights

  • Grimes Point Archaeological Area: Take a self-guided interpreted walking tour through ancient petroglyphs and rock art.
  • Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge: The Paiute and Shoshone people have lived near these diverse wetlands for thousands of years and the area attracts more than a quarter million waterfowl annually.
  • Fox Peak Station: Shop for American Indian crafts at this convenient rest stop. 

 

Day 4: Lovelock to Reno Highlights

  • Lovelock Cave Backcountry Byway: Self-guided driving tour to the Lovelock Cave archeological site where, in 1924, archeologists discovered a 2000 year-old Tule duck decoy.
  • Pyramid Lake Paiute Museum and Visitors Center: Discover the unique history and culture of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe (Kuyuidokado) before exploring the sacred Pyramid Lake area.
  • Popcorn Rock Wildlife Viewing Area: Learn about the fish, wildlife and the distinctive tufa rock formations that surround Pyramid Lake, a stunning and sacred site for the Paiute people.
